In an interesting take on brand persuasion run amok “Branded,” releases in theaters today. The sci-fi thriller described on the official website as “A dark and mind-bending journey into a surreal, dystopian society where mega-corporations have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population deluded, dependent and passive.” previewed at Comic Con San Diego this past July. Rival advertising agencies battle for the minds of consumers on a whole new level deploying mind control codes implanted in every day products (seemingly in the form of alien creatures) in an effort to influence people’s thoughts and desires.

The Russian produced film directed by Jamie Bradshaw and Aleksandr Dulerayn stars British actor Ed Stoppard as hero Misha Galkin (the only one who can see the creatures) and the lovely Leelee Sobieski as girlfriend Abby Givens. Max Von Sydow and Jeffrey Tambor round out the cast as sinister masterminds posing the question “how far are you willing to go?”

Visit the website to be treated to a pre-loader rotation of faux brands like Vipsache and Yepple with recognizable real world counterparts. Far from sounding far-fetched the premise that brand messages can be put to nefarious use is especially compelling. Whether the film will be equally so remains to be seen but I’m thinking finding out may be worth the price of admission.
