It brings brightly colored pianos to the parks and public spaces of NYC’s five boroughs for anyone and everyone to play. It is the world’s largest annual street piano installation and it is back this June!
Every single piano is unique and each one is created at no cost by a generous talented artist for example or a community group via their open application process. In the summer, over a period of two weeks “the pianos serve as gathering places in different communities, hosting impromptu concerts by professionals and amateurs alike in an open festival of music for all of New York City”.
Once the two weeks have come to an end Sing for Hope donate each piano to schools and hospitals. As Sing for Hope explain ” While their time on the streets is a joyful event for our city, the Sing for Hope Pianos’ true impact lies in their service as ongoing cornerstones of arts access for communities and individuals in need”.
The aim this year is to raise $25,000 in order to have more pianos to include to make an impact throughout New York’s communities. Sing for Hope explain “We want to ensure that everyone—from the Bronx to the southern tip of Staten Island—has access to the arts this summer!”.
The project can be viewed on KickStarter.com. According to Sing for Hope “As NYC’s largest public art project, the Sing for Hope Pianos impacts an estimated 2 million New Yorkers and visitors each year”. What a truly magical project for everyone to enjoy over the summer!
