Many monopolizing companies end up in a feud between each other because quite frankly, they’re in a league where they only have one another to compete against. In my opinion, the key here is to focus on keeping the market to themselves and keep more companies from joining their circle but these companies take stabs at each other year after year through comparative advertising. Here are our Top 3 Ad Campaign Attacks of All Time:

3. Burger King vs. McDonalds: “Whopper Virgins”

These two fast food giants have constantly taken shots at each other for decades, though much of it has been done without direct attacks. The most obvious was in 2009, when Burger King went to battle with McDonald’s using comparative marketing. The “BK’s Whopper Virgins” campaign put the two brands’ signature products (The Whopper and Big Mac of course) to a taste test by people in remote places around the world.

The ads failed miserably as the public saw the ads as exploitative and racist and even ended in some protests. Despite this, sure enough the marketing trails still exist.

2. Pepsi vs. Coke: “The Pepsi Challenge”

These two have been targeting each other since the 70’s, but the most widely-known marketing skirmish between the two was the Pepsi Challenge in 1975. Pepsi paraded around its triumph in the taste test for years, eventually prompting Coca-Cola’s horrific New Coke debacle in 1986. Since then, they’ve taken the fight into outer space, fought over loyalty programs, and raged over social media.

1. Mac vs. PC: “Get a Mac”

None of us can forget the infamous “Get a Mac” TV and web-exclusive ad campaign. You can easily picture the minimalist template engaged during the campaign: Apple’s all-white background and uncluttered foreground. A casually dressed Justin Long presenting himself as a Mac (“Hello, I’m a Mac”), accompanied by the suit-and-tie clad John Hodgman introducing himself as a non-Mac PC (“And I’m a PC”). For 4 years straight Apple brilliantly played off of Microsoft’s weaknesses in the campaigns through humor and humiliation in an epic attack for the ages.
