TYPO Conference Comes to San Francisco

The first days of spring are nearly here, a perfect time to shake off any left over winter blues and recharge our creative batteries. Enter TYPO, the leading international design conference. An outgrowth of well-known typography publication FUSE magazine, TYPO has evolved over the course of 16 years from being a typography focused event to “a broader platform exploring graphic design, digital media, advertisement, technology, culture, entertainment and business.” Providing unique opportunities for designers to gather, share and discuss... Skills Designers Need Now

Scan almost any online graphic design discussion board and chances are that you’ll quickly spot a common set of questions being asked. What are the skills I need now? And, what is the best way to get them? While, concerns about how to stay current in our industry are not new it is safe to say that current economic conditions, rapidly changing technology and evolving demands in the design profession overall have certainly ratcheted up the conversation level. Enterprising by Design: Kansas University Student Design Center

When students at Kansas University (KU) realized demand for quality design services on campus, they proposed an enterprising solution—a student run design center. According to The University Daily Kansan, “Student Senate president Libby Johnson and vice president Gabe Bliss pitched the idea” for the Student Design Center after learning that student organizations were having a hard time effectively communicating to the larger student population. Thus the KU Student Design Center was born. The center, which “serves as a creative... CONTINUE READING

The 2012 Oscars: Brands Compete for Cut of the “Red Carpet”

Whether you were focused on Angie’s leg, JLo’s… um, neckline or genuinely interested in seeing who would bring home the award for best picture during last Sunday night’s Academy Awards show, major brands were there hoping to catch your attention. The three-hour ceremony provided plenty of time for brands to showcase themselves through red carpet product placement as well as in ad spots. Add in sustained engagement of pre-event, during and post-event buzz and an opportunity to do some... CONTINUE READING

Packaging & Label Design: Opportunities for Design Innovation Part 2 of 2

Aside from the excellent beer and awesome burgers at New York City bar, Idle Hands, Packaging & Label Design: Opportunities For Design Innovation: Part 1 discussed the importance of packaging and label design as marketing differentiators, especially in highly competitive, high end and niche markets. Dove “Tweeting” Its Way Into Consumer Hearts for Valentine’s Day

Friends, lovers, countrymen give us your tweets. At least that’s what Unilever CPG beauty brand Dove is asking as part of their interactive Valentine’s Day campaign unveiled at London’s Victoria Station yesterday. A prime example of how a brand can successfully align message, medium and strategy, the twitter-based campaign, which runs from February 13-19 invites London’s over 350,000 daily commuters to respond to questions such as Monday’s “Tell us: What makes you feel beautiful every day?” and today’s “What... Packaging & Label Design: Opportunities for Design Innovation Part 1 of 2

Last week some friends and I took a break from our respective creative pursuits and indulged in a craft beer tasting at the cozy, speak-easy themed craft beer bar Idle Hands in NYC. Naturally, the topic of packaging, specifically wine and beer labels came up. Yes, this is what designers talk about when they “let loose.” So I made mental note when our brewery representative called attention to the awesome label design for 21st Amendment’s Back in Black IPA,... Graffiti Art: from Urban Expression to Corporate Commodity A Racial Divide?

Whether you consider it an urban eye-sore or an extension of early cave paintings, the influence of graffiti art can be seen in almost every area of design from fashion to packaging, skateboard gear and video game art. Some cases in point are Hello Kitty’s for Sephora Graffiti collection and a recently commissioned mural for the launch of video game Soul Caliber V by Jim Rockwell of creative collective ENDoftheLINE. This past week NBCLosAngeles.com reported that graffiti artist David... CONTINUE READING

PINTEREST

It seems that in no time at all the online pin board Pinterest has exploded into the online consciousness. According to Mashable, “Pinterest accounted for 3.6% of referral traffic, while Twitter just barely edged ahead of the newcomer, accounting for 3.61% of referral traffic.” For those of you who don’t already know, Pinterest is a by-invitation-only, virtual pin board that allows users to organize and share items of interest across the web. Or, as better put on their site... CONTINUE READING
