Packaging & Label Design: Opportunities for Design Innovation Part 2 of 2

Aside from the excellent beer and awesome burgers at New York City bar, Idle Hands, Packaging & Label Design: Opportunities For Design Innovation: Part 1 discussed the importance of packaging and label design as marketing differentiators, especially in highly competitive, high end and niche markets. In part two we continue the conversation with Devon Wade, a Digital and Interactive Marketing Manager who completed a graduate thesis on niche marketing while studying at NYU and Carmela Davis, Branch Operations Manager... Dove “Tweeting” Its Way Into Consumer Hearts for Valentine’s Day

Friends, lovers, countrymen give us your tweets. At least that’s what Unilever CPG beauty brand Dove is asking as part of their interactive Valentine’s Day campaign unveiled at London’s Victoria Station yesterday. A prime example of how a brand can successfully align message, medium and strategy, the twitter-based campaign, which runs from February 13-19 invites London’s over 350,000 daily commuters to respond to questions such as Monday’s “Tell us: What makes you feel beautiful every day?” and today’s “What... Packaging & Label Design: Opportunities for Design Innovation Part 1 of 2

Last week some friends and I took a break from our respective creative pursuits and indulged in a craft beer tasting at the cozy, speak-easy themed craft beer bar Idle Hands in NYC. Naturally, the topic of packaging, specifically wine and beer labels came up. Yes, this is what designers talk about when they “let loose.” So I made mental note when our brewery representative called attention to the awesome label design for 21st Amendment’s Back in Black IPA,... Graffiti Art: from Urban Expression to Corporate Commodity A Racial Divide?

Whether you consider it an urban eye-sore or an extension of early cave paintings, the influence of graffiti art can be seen in almost every area of design from fashion to packaging, skateboard gear and video game art. Some cases in point are Hello Kitty’s for Sephora Graffiti collection and a recently commissioned mural for the launch of video game Soul Caliber V by Jim Rockwell of creative collective ENDoftheLINE. This past week NBCLosAngeles.com reported that graffiti artist David... CONTINUE READING

PINTEREST

It seems that in no time at all the online pin board Pinterest has exploded into the online consciousness. According to Mashable, “Pinterest accounted for 3.6% of referral traffic, while Twitter just barely edged ahead of the newcomer, accounting for 3.61% of referral traffic.” For those of you who don’t already know, Pinterest is a by-invitation-only, virtual pin board that allows users to organize and share items of interest across the web. Or, as better put on their site... CONTINUE READING

Tom Morin's Threads of Influence Exhibit

A potential pitfall of writing is becoming overly enamored of one’s subject. This is exactly what occurred when I started researching the work of Tom Morin whose work is now on view at Yale University Robert B. Haas Family Library in an exhibit entitled “Threads of Influence: The Visual History of a Life in Graphic Design.” Morin is an accomplished graphic designer specializing in corporate communications and branding and identity design whose career spans forty years. The exhibit, loosely... CONTINUE READING

Fueling the Creative Economy Part II: Call to Graphic Designers, 'Get Involved'

In my January 3rd article, Fueling the Creative Economy I wrote about the appointment of Joe Bookchin to the position of director of the Office of the Creative Economy in Vermont, as well as creative economy initiatives in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, and their importance to our industry’s continued health and development. Subsequently, I was pleasantly surprised to be contacted by Jean Maginnis, Founder & Executive Director, Maine Center for Creativity and Christine Harris, CEO Christine Harris Connections and...
