Which Comes First: The Web Design or The Graphic Design?

The trick is to keep the communications open so the left hand knows what the right is doing and vice versa. When the communication fails, problems rear their ugly heads and they do it... Behance Portfolio Review Week

Portfolio review—two words capable of striking fear into the hearts of artists and designers everywhere. It can be one of the most valuable exercises for creatives to undergo but many of us dread it. Not only is there critique of the work, but the actual presentation of the work itself. Digital, print, both? How many pieces? What to include, what to leave out? Underlying it all is the fact that portfolio review is typically done in an academic or... CONTINUE READING

Mark Your Calendars: NYC Creative Week 2012

In a bustling city like New York, the challenge isn’t finding something to do but rather deciding from a multitude of possibilities. Fortunately for us, NYC Creative Week makes it easy by providing a full week of chances for participation. Started in 2009 by The One Club, a non profit organization whose mission is to “champion and promote excellence in advertising and design in all forms,” and proclaimed an annual city-wide event by the Office of the Mayor of... Creative Placemaking Conference at Rutgers

On a slightly overcast yet sunny Wednesday morning I made my way from Hoboken, to Paul Robeson Center at Rutgers University Newark campus for an all day affair called Create a Place: Art Builds Communities, a Creative Placemaking Conference organized by Arts Build Communities. Before going into detail about what Creative Placemaking is, and what made the conference such a worthwhile experience let me share some words from Newark mayor Cory A. Booker’s welcome address on the importance of... CONTINUE READING

The Pitch: Advertising Students vs. Ad Agency Pros for a Good Cause

Even across the pond in the U.K., lack of funding for school programs is a common dilemma, one for which University of Creative Arts students, Charlotte Hugh and Danny Pallett derived an uncommon solution they appropriately named The Pitch. Conceived as a fundraiser for their third year class’ degree show, and cleverly evoking the competitive and collaborative aspects of both advertising and sports, “The Pitch” brought together teams of students, graduates and advertising agency folks in a football tournament... Sappi Presents The Standard 5: Special Effects in NYC

Last week I was fortunate to attend Sappi’s The Standard 5: Special Effects event presenting the newest edition of The Standard (Enlarged Cover Photo to Left), a resource for designers and printers. A packed house greeted me at SVA Theater as the buzz of conversation overflowed out onto the street through the open theater doors and passing New Yorkers paused mid stride to peer in and try to catch a glimpse inside. Held partly as a benefit for 826... CONTINUE READING

Getting Started as a Designer: Freelance First or Agency First?

I love working with new designers. In fact, I spend most of my time mentoring new designers through my ebook, business critique service, and blog. One of the most common questions I get from up and coming designers is this: “Should I start out freelancing or start by working at an agency?” It’s a great question and can be a pretty difficult one to answer, but today, I want to offer some pros and cons for both freelancing first...
