Sure, there are perks to freelance life like flexible hours and the ability to work from home, but ask any honest independent creative professional and they’ll tell you there are downsides too. One of the biggest? Less daily opportunities for collaboration and interaction with like-minded peers, something The Oatmeal creator Matthew Inman comically captures in “Why Working from Home is both Awesome and Horrible” Recognizing this, a growing number of co-working spaces have emerged worldwide with 537 in the... Model releases and property releases are simple legal agreements between a photographer and another person. The general purpose of a model or property release is to document the consent of the person to use their likeness, or the representation of a property, in a photograph. Ideally, releases should be signed before the photography takes place. A release allows the photographer to make and use the photographs for purpose(s) described in the release and can also contain other terms specific... CONTINUE READING
Earlier this month “The Life of Julia,” an interactive slideshow designed to contrast the Obama campaign’s policies with Republican presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney’s managed to cause a bit of a stir, generating over 2,900 tweets on Twitter, 51,000 “Likes” on Facebook (as of this writing) and filling the blogosphere and online news channels with an assortment of rebukes, responses and parodies. Politically speaking, perhaps not much remains to be explored. But what about from a graphic design standpoint? Embedded... CONTINUE READING
As a student of the history of graphic design, I’ve observed that technology—everything from the first reed stylus to Gutenberg’s moveable type—has always been a primary driver of change. When production moved to the desktop, technology took the lead and design got left behind. Thanks to new tools for designers, that’s changing. I’m excited about graphic design again. A work floor full of typesetters showed up at the New York Tribune in 1886, only to be thanked for their... CONTINUE READING

What do a Graphic Designer in Karachi, Pakistan, a photographer in Treviso, Italy, an Illustrator in Bogota, Colombia and an Art Director in Montreal, Canada all have in common? They represent just a portion of the 4,000 creatives worldwide to participate in Behance Portfolio Review week kicked off at Grind NYC on Tuesday, May 15. One of the largest sites offering WordPress themes is Elegant Themes. With nearly 100 themes created to date, Elegant Themes takes the approach that “less than more.” Rather than pack each WordPress theme with flashy graphics, superfluous features, and content on top of content, Elegant Themes keeps its designs clean and, well, “elegant.” The site sells to customers and developers using a yearly subscription model. GraphicDesign caught up with Elegant Themes founder and designer Nick Roach, who shared his... CONTINUE READING
UK designer Roy McCarthy has developed an alternative Olympics brand, intended for people to celebrate the Games in their own environment. McCarthy was inspired by an interview on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show last weekend in the UK, during which Lord Coe was questioned about legislation around the use of the London 2012 branding. Coe’s remarks were later quoted by Owen Gibson in The Guardian, saying that the legislation was essential “in protecting the sponsors who come to the... CONTINUE READING
It has been years since I started my career as a graphic designer, and I can still remember the passion and enthusiasm to get my first design task. Many designers get the same feeling when they finish their studies or design school and start their career. As time passes, you experience the ups and downs of your career; you sometimes meet annoying clients, have to work under stress and might encounter problems that could even spoil your great ideas.... My article, The Sad State of Design, 2012, garnered some excellent comments from readers and the poll showed an overwhelming number who agreed that the design industry is in something of a sad state (Results: 93%, yes 7%, no). So, does that mean that graphic design is going to the dogs and there’s no hope? Hardly. All it needs is a slight change in the way we approach things. Fellow Advisory Board member, Dave Bricker, summed it up pretty... CONTINUE READING
